Are you at risk of falling over or know someone who may be?

As you get older you may be at greater risk of falling over, you may just feel a little more unsteady on your feet or need to build your muscles (as well as your confidence) having experienced a fall.

If you would like to attend a class, you can either call the class instructor or contact Trish Cowie, physical activity referral co-ordinator on 07825 609331 or email trish.cowie@wiltshire.gov.uk

The classes closest to the Malmesbury community area are held in Malmesbury, Cricklade and Royal Wootton Bassett and are currently supported by Wiltshire Council in partnership with NHS Wiltshire, Places for People Leisure, Age UK, Green Square Group and Aster Communities.  There are other classes available in the community which are run by independent fitness instructors; for more information please contact Age UK Wiltshire on 01380 727767 or email admin@ageukwiltshire.org.uk.

Types of classes
Chair based exercise classes
Chair based exercise has been shown to improve strength and balance, especially aiding the muscles used in everyday activities, such as washing, brushing your hair, dressing and jobs around the house.

Chair based exercise sessions are run in the community so you can exercise with the motivation of a group but from the comfort of a chair. Exercises are specially devised for those who have been inactive for a long time.

Falls Prevention classes
Designed to help those who have had a fall or who are afraid of falling, these classes are a mixture of chair based and standing exercises designed to improve strength, balance and increase confidence.

This class will safely and effectively improve your physical function and postural stability to reduce the risk of a fall.

Chair based and standing classes
For those who want to become more active, these classes are a mixture of seated and standing exercises. This is slightly more active than the chair based class.

If you are worried about getting to the classes, do contact the class leader as she may know of someone else attending from your town or village.  Alternatively, contact Malmesbury Link on 01666 840861 who may be able to provide you with transport.
